2020 is upon us. You can’t throw a rock without hitting a word about the year of vision. Kind of a given … Perhaps it is, but, if our eyes are not healthy it will not matter, our vision will also be corrupt. Jesus teaches us that “The eye is the lamp of the body and if your eyes are healthy then your whole body will be full of light.” What does it mean though, to have “healthy” eyes? The word translated as “healthy” here is from the Greek word aplous. Distilled down, it means to be of singular & undivided focus, having no secrets or double agenda. It’s the absence of double mindedness. Scripture also tells us that a double minded person is unstable in all their ways, like a wave at sea that is blown and tossed by the wind, and should not expect to receive anything. Speaking of wind, Jesus taught Nicodemus that the person who is born of the Spirit takes after the Spirit who is a wind that blows wherever they please. You can be the wind or the wave.
2020 may be a year of clearer vision, but I feel strongly that this is because it is a season where we learn what it means to be the light of the world that “darkness cannot overcome,” comprehend or grasp a hold of. This is Jesus’ prayer for us: that we would share in his same glory; that we would also carry the life within us that is the light of men. This is the light that illuminates hearts with grace and truth, to the revelation that we are truly children of God. The Father of Light’s desire is for us to abide in him as he abides in us. The Spirit who gave birth to you, is willing to teach you how to carry this light. The position you take however, is not a passive one waiting for a handout; waiting to get hit with a vision, then find yourself on autopilot moving effortlessly towards your destiny. It requires something from you, your eyes to be healthy, aplous; to have a singular focus on what you believe in and unwavering trust in God’s love and good will for us. Fear is doubt that gives birth to double mindedness, the result of which is a visionless life of being tossed to and fro by the powers that be. If you have more faith in the devil’s power to steal, kill, and destroy than God’s promise to work out all things for good, you are worshiping the devil on the side, granting access to darkness into your future through your beliefs. That is double mindedness, having unhealthy eyes. Jesus tells us that those who believe in the Light become children of the light. That light growing in you will ignite your eyes to be like lamps to clearly light your path and illuminate your whole body with life. It will give clarity, health and singularity in your vision. The same Creator that in the beginning said “let there be light,” is speaking this very same light into your hearts. It carries the same creative power: A light that darkness can not overcome. His promise is for a hope and a future, to prosper you and not to harm you. Believe in the light. Without the light there is no 2020 vision.
